Women’s World Cup Stars Join Beach FC/NYSL Coaching Staff...

Beach FC/NYSL welcomes two Women’s World Cup Stars to the Coaching Staff:

Mercy Akide Udoh was the first African Women's Footballer of the year (2002) and was a 1999 and 2004 FIFA World All-Star.

She has played for Nigeria in the last three FIFA Women's World Cups and also helped Nigeria's Super Falcons to three African Women Championships (AWC) titles in 1998, 2000 and 2002. In November 2004, in 2005, she was named by FIFA as one of its 15 Ambassadors for Women Football around the world.

Mercy Akide is the continent's best player and the first African to play in the US Women's Soccer League (WUSA), for the San Diego Spirit.

Florence Omagbemi, who has been captain of the Nigerian national team and represented her country in over 80 games, more than any other player. Florence played in the WUSA with both Boston and San Diego. Merci and Flo played together in Nigeria on the national team and club soccer."

The duo of Akide and Omagbemi also led the Hampton Roads Piranhas to an undefeated W-league 14-0-0 season in 2003 and the club’s first National championship title in 9 seasons of play. Akide finished 10th in the league in scoring with seven goals and five assists for 19 points, but scored her most important goal of the year in overtime of the championship. In a scoreless match, in which Akide and Omagbemi controlled the play and had several dangerous chances, Akide’s 96th minute strike earned her the W-League Championship Most Valuable Player honor.

Gerry Sharpe, Director of Soccer says, “Experience, top-class playing ability, tremendous knowledge of the game and a great desire to pass on their qualities to our youth players made hiring Mercy and Flo a distinct pleasure. I trust that everyone connected with Beach FC and indeed the whole area soccer scene will take note of these prestigious appointments.”

Karl Greaves, Girls Director of Coaching states, “We are very fortunate to have two of the world’s most famous international soccer players on staff. They both have a gift of working with young people. Both players are great role models and our young players will have the ability to interact with Mercy and Flo on a daily basis.”

Andy Walker, Beach FC Executive Director, adds, “Hiring Mercy and Flo further supports Beach FC/NYSL’s commitment to hire the highest qualified and experienced coaches. Our player development model is supported by our top class coaching staff on the boys and girls side, and the addition of Mercy and Flo to the staff further acknowledges this priority.”

Mercy and Flo will be working with the travel players during Wednesday night Technical Training and will be coaching specific age group teams yet to be determined. In addition to these responsibilities, both Mercy and Flo will be working some of the 2008 summer camp dates for NYSL & The Piranhas, The 2008 Beach FC Academy and 2008 NYSL STAR Academy and are available for individual training. If you are interested in training with either player, please contact Karl Greaves at docgirls@beachfc.com.

Keegan Named CNU Women's Soccer Coach...

New women's soccer Head Coach Ruth Keegan

New women's soccer Head Coach Ruth Keegan

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport University Director of Athletics, C.J. Woollum, today announced the hiring of RUTH KEEGAN as the school’s new women’s soccer coach.

“We are thrilled to have Ruth join our staff,” Woollum said. “Her vast experience and knowledge of the game assures us that our women’s soccer program will remain among the elite in Division III.”

Keegan’s coaching experience has come at several different levels. She served as an assistant at Old Dominion University from 1996-2006, and was the head coach of the soccer squad at Granby High School in Norfolk last season.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead the Christopher Newport women’s soccer program,” Keegan said. “I’ve always wanted to be a head coach at the collegiate level, and I look forward to continuing the great tradition of the program.”

Keegan, a native of Dublin, Ireland, graduated from Methodist College in 1995, and was an All-American and Dixie Conference Player of the Year while with the Monarchs. Her playing experience also includes five years with the Republic of Ireland national team.

Keegan takes over the CNU program following the departure of Kwame Llloyd, who recently became head coach at the University of Vermont. Lloyd led CNU to an overall record of 91-40-8 over the last seven seasons. His team reached the NCAA Tournament three times, including an “Elite 8” appearance in 2004 when the Captains finished 16-4-3.

“From what I’ve seen, we’ve got a good core group,” Keegan continued. “The players have worked hard in the off-season and we’re ready to begin our official spring workouts on Monday.”

Beach FC U15 Red Player, Drew Hartell, Invited to the US Soccer U17 Residency Program...Congratulations to Drew Hartell, Beach FC U15 Red, on his invitation to the US Soccer Federation Under-17 Residency Program this spring. Drew has been an impact player on the U15 Red for several years and was noticed by the United States Soccer Federation Staff at the 2007 Disney Showcase Tournament. Drew has been with Beach FC since his U9 year when he was coached by Beach FC Director of Soccer, Gerry Sharpe. We will keep you posted on Drew's progress as he plans his soccer future. Drew's invitation proves that hard work on and off the field combined with a player development training model can lead to great things! We wish Drew the very best!

Please read below to find out more about the US Soccer Under-17 Residency Program.

CHICAGO (August 22, 2006) - U.S. Soccer's Under-17 Residency Program's fall semester kicked off this week as the 40 players began training at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.

With only a year until the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, the 40-player roster consists almost entirely of eligible players (born on or after Jan. 1, 1990), as 26 of the players were born in 1990 and 13 in 1991. Eleven of the 12 older players (born in 1988 and 1989) moved on to college or the professional ranks earlier this summer, with only Kyle Davies remaining in Residency to finish up his high school studies this semester.

In all, 21 players return to the Residency Program for at least their second semester, while 19 players will begin their first semester under the instruction of U.S. Under-17 Men's National Team head coach John Hackworth. Of the new players, nine were born in 1990 and 10 were born in 1991.

In an effort to ensure they identified the top 40 players in the extensive player pool, Hackworth and the U-17 staff invited a total of 76 players into selected camps from August 2005 to July 2006. While the U-17 coaching staff travels around the country to scout players, inviting them into a U-17 national camp allowed the coaching staff to get an in-depth and personal view of each player.

"In the past, finding the best players has always been a little tough because you're basing your decisions on watching players with their club teams," said Hackworth. "It is much different when you have them with you in the national team camp, have them in training and when you put them in game situations and they put on a national team jersey. Getting a chance to see these kids perform as part of the U-17s has been invaluable in terms of picking out the best players for the Residency Program."

All of the players will be competing to be a part of the next FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will take place from Aug. 18 to Sept. 9, 2007, in South Korea. The U.S. is the only country that has qualified and competed in all 11 FIFA World Championships at this age group. The U.S. will attempt to continue the streak as the CONCACAF Under-17 Qualifying Tournament will take place in April of 2007.

The 40 U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and train daily under the guidance of Hackworth and assistant coaches Keith Fulk, Raul Diaz Arce, Tim Mulqueen and Brian Maisonneuve. Starting this semester, there is one notable schedule change in the Residency Program as the players will now train at IMG Academy in the morning and attend classes at Edison Academy in the afternoon.

Started in 1999, the U.S. Soccer Residency Program has become a symbol of U.S. Soccer's dedication to producing development opportunities for players and the success of the Youth National Teams. With the successes of the U.S. Under-17 MNT during the first few years, the number of players invited into the full-time Residency Program was doubled from 20 to 40, adding 10 additional players in both fall semesters of 2002 and 2003. U.S. Soccer has been able to increase the number of players enrolled in the program to provide greater opportunities for young players and increase its investment in player development. With 40 players in Residency, the program is able to field two full teams that train together during the week, and get the chance to compete against club, college and international teams on the weekends.

"The residency program has given our players an excellent opportunity to grow and move up the ladder in the world of soccer and become professionals in Major League Soccer, some of the biggest clubs in Europe and even make an impact on the full U.S. Men's National Team," said Hackworth. "We will look to continue this progress here in Bradenton by providing the players with an environment where they can prosper as individual players and gel as a team, crucial elements that have allowed for a positive move forward for all of our men's national team programs."

Since its inception, 170 players have been through the full-time Residency Program, and more than 40 of those players have moved on to Major League Soccer, or the professional leagues in Europe. Twelve players have also registered at least one cap with the full MNT: Freddy Adu, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Bobby Convey, Landon Donovan, Eddie Gaven, Eddie Johnson, Chad Marshall, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Santino Quaranta and Jonathan Spector. Beasley and Donovan both started in the 2002 FIFA World Cup as 20-year-olds, and were joined by Convey, Onyewu and Johnson in 2006.

In its first year of existence, the U.S. Soccer Residency Program enrolled 20 of the elite players in the country to train together in Bradenton and produced instant success as the Under-17s qualified for the FIFA Under-17 World Championship in New Zealand in November of 1999. On the world stage, the American teenagers rose to the occasion, winning their group and advancing to the semifinals before being ousted in a penalty shootout. The fourth-place finish tied for the best showing by a U.S. Men's Youth National Team in a major international competition. Also, U.S. stars Donovan and Beasley were awarded the Gold and Silver Balls, respectively, as the top two players in the entire tournament.

After struggling in the "Group of Death" two years later, the U.S. rebounded with back-to-back fifth place finishes in the following two FIFA U-17 World Championships in 2003 and 2005. Last September at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Championship, the U.S. went undefeated in group play to win their group for just the third time in 11 appearances, and the first time since 1999.

The girls played some of their best soccer with relentless front-line and mid-field pressure by Ashley Gonzalez, Virginia Hernandez, Rebecca Johannes, Carly Mackey, Kara Mason, Melanie Oakes, Kirsten Runkles, Nickie Ivey, Mary Rives Dougherty and Grace Haverly. In game 2 the girls played to a 1-1 tie in a battle with the Roanoke Star Elite, with a goal by Mary Rives Dougherty.

The semi-final game went to PK’s after a 1-1 tie with a goal by Nickie Ivey, in which the Piranhas prevailed in the 9th PK. Defense has been a brick wall, allowing just 2 goals over a four game tournament and only 5 goals over 9 games this season, led by Danielle Goldberg, Olivia Camper, Caitlyn Dodd and Julia Culbertson. Our keeper, Ashlee Hood has been a Monster in goal, shutting down all attempts and winning a critical PK battle in the semi-final. OUTSTANDING JOB GIRLS!!!

Super 20 Men and Women Reach National Finals in New Hampshire: Piranhas Super 20 Women and Men Earn Trips to North American Finals in New Hampshire on August 2-5.

Women:

The South Atlantic Division leading Hampton Roads Piranhas U20 Women extended their lead over the remainder of the pack on Saturday with a 5-0 win in Manassas against the Northern Va. Majestics.

An impressive, two goal, one assist performance out of striker Genna Brand produced a 3-0 half time lead for the Piranhas. The Piranhas got on the board early with an outstanding goal. Brand about to receive a ball at the top of the six from Ashley Kukura allowed the ball to go through her legs, her movement froze the keeper and the ball finished in the back of the net. Brand then scored twice; her second goal coming off an assist from Megan Ryan to give the Piranhas their 3-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Piranhas maintain their dominant play and finished off the match with two goals from Victoria Jackson. The fifth goal came off an assist from Anna Curfman. The Piranhas have now secured a trip to the North American Finals. The Piranhas are now 6-0-0 and have scored 21 goals and allowed 1 goal on the season.

Men:

The Piranhas Super 20 Men clinched the South Atlantic Division on Thursday as they defeated the Northern Virginia Royals 5-1 in Nokesville, Va. The men finish the season at home against Triangle FC on Wednesday, July 18 at 1:00pm at Shipps Corner. The Piranhas have scored 20 goals and have only allowed 6. The Piranhas have now secured a trip to the North American Finals.

Hampton Roads Piranhas Super 20 Director, Andy Walker, states, “We are very proud of our players as they have worked hard for 3 months to reach this level. We are excited to represent the club in New Hampshire. Most importantly, our players will be better prepared for their rigorous College and Club seasons over the next 10 months.”

Beach’s Ashe is a real Dynamo... by Christopher A. Vito The Virginian-Pilot

Corey Ashe felt small at the Major League Soccer SuperDraft in January. For a 5-foot-4 player like Ashe, that didn’t come as a surprise. But this was a different kind of small. The Virginia Beach native said he was humbled and a bit overwhelmed by the ESPN camera crews that had set up in Indianapolis, the site of the draft. That feeling quickly evaporated, however, when Ashe heard his name called in the second round, No. 26 overall. “When Houston picked me, it became this great experience,” Ashe said by phone from Houston, where he is in his rookie season and preparing for tonight’s game at the Chicago Fire. “I felt a lot better, one of the best experiences of my life.”

His young career got better last month, when he debuted with the Dynamo. His promotion from the team’s senior developmental squad made Ashe the third Beach native to play in the MLS. And the Dynamo have been nearly untouchable since Ashe joined the once injury-decimated club. They are 7-2-1 in MLS since the midfielder’s call-up, allowing Houston to rise from the cellar to first place in the Western Conference. All the while, the 21-yearold Ashe is trying to keep a level head and chip in where he can. That’s difficult to do while playing for the defending league champions. It’s also difficult to do from the sideline. After netting 22 goals at North Carolina, Ashe has one assist through 10 games with the Dynamo in limited playing time.

Ashe is confident his game will come around with more time on the field. “For now, I understand that I’m the guy who comes in for 10 minutes to give other guys a breather,” Ashe said, “but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be a goal scorer. I just have to let everything work itself out.” That time may yet come for Ashe, a former standout on the United States under-17 national team. One of his Houston teammates, Wade Barrett, said it could be sooner than Ashe thinks. Barrett has seen flashes of Ashe’s potential in practice, where the rookie’s full-throttle style of play is most visible. “He’s been a positive-impact player for us and that’s tough for a first-year player who’s just trying to get acclimated,” Barrett said. “I know he’s won over a couple of the veterans with his speed and his attitude in practice.”

“It’s my job,” Ashe said. “I don’t want anyone to take it from me because of my size, guys.”

The second-shortest player selected in this year’s draft, Ashe knows he needs to be swift to stay competitive. The Dynamo generously list him at 5-6.

“But they always add an inch or two, don’t they?” Ashe said jokingly.

Hampton Roads Piranhas

USL News Release - TAMPA, FL - Piranhas acquire PDL team...Team to fulfill 2007 schedule established for Submariners...United Soccer Leagues announced today that the PDL franchise rights for the territory of Hampton Roads, including Virginia Beach, have been acquired by the Hampton Roads Piranhas, a 13-year member and 2003 champion of the W-League. The club will begin play in 2007, assuming the schedule previously established for the Virginia Beach Submariners. The club also unveiled its new logo.

The Piranhas were among the pioneer clubs in the W-League when it was officially launched in 1995. Led by W-League Executive Committee member Marcie Laumann, the club has helped raise the benchmark for excellence in the league, winning numerous awards and hosting the W-League Championship on two occasions. Laumann, her husband Doc, and the club were inducted into the USL Hall of Fame in 2004 for their years of service as Builders in USL.

The new Hampton Roads Piranhas men's team will assume the PDL schedule previously established for the Submariners for the 2007 season as members of the Mid Atlantic Division. The club will also provide 2007 season passes for both the PDL and W-League Piranhas to 2007 season ticket holders of the Mariners and Submariners. The PDL team will play at site to be announced and will be coached by former Submariners coach Jon Hall. Hall coached the team to a division title last year and is re-loading the roster for the 2007 campaign.

"With the twists and turns of the past few weeks, I am thrilled that the team will be playing," said Hall. "We are proud to be a part of the Piranhas organization."

"I am thrilled to have Jon back at the helm of the PDL Piranhas," said Piranhas General Manager Marcie Laumann. "He did an amazing job with the PDL team last season and we are fortunate to have him as part of the Piranhas organization."

"We are grateful to Marcie Laumann and those individuals behind the Piranhas for stepping in and making the commitment to ensure PDL soccer continues in Virginia Beach," said USL Executive Vice President and COO Tim Holt. "With their excellent record on and off the field, the Piranhas were without question our first option and proven operators of a successful soccer team."

The Piranhas, who recently created the Piranhas Youth Foundation with several youth soccer organizations, previously added Boys and Girls USL Super-20 League teams for the 2007 season as part of their growth into a vertically-integrated club.

"It was my goal in forming this foundation that the Piranhas W-League team, and our new boys and girls youth teams work as one in the pyramid system USL has provided across North America," said General Manager Marcie Laumann. "It is a huge undertaking, but with the commitment we have from our youth affiliates we can now pursue the highest level of USL opportunities available for both the boys and girls teams as well as the adult player."

"Although there are unique challenges to adding a PDL team on short notice, we firmly believe that this will help the foundation provide a complete platform for player development for both boys and girls in the Hampton Roads area and look forward to the challenge," added Laumann.

In conjunction with the announcement today at a press conference at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel, the club also unveiled its new logo, which features a newly designed piranha graphic in a Native American motif.

"It was time for an update," said Laumann. "Although our original Piranha with long eye lashes and a fat tummy was loved by our fans, the new logo better represents our commitment to both the men's and women's side of the pitch.

’92 Piranhas Capture Beach FC Classic and place at Score at the Shore South, Tampa...During the windy championship game, the ’92 Piranhas held on for a 1-0 win against a strong Weston Township team from New Jersey to win the Beach FC Spring Classic. After a 0-0 first half, the Piranhas were able to strike quickly in the first 10 minutes while going against the wind in the second half. Amelia Wallace- Zocher, team MVP for the tournament, fittingly scored the game winner as she stepped up to take the corner and was able to bend it in from the right side of the field. The game saw plenty of missed opportunities but with a strong effort in goal by Marie Connor and stellar defending by Sam Butrym, Colleen Looney, Torrie Jackson, and Katie Morris, the Piranhas came out on top. In the first game of the tournament, it was a sea-saw battle but Wallace-Zocher opened up the scoring by dribbling around the keeper to put away the lone goal of the game. Against the next opponent, the Piranhas again showed their strength and determination. The Piranhas never panicked after being down 1- 0 in the second game of the day. Wallace- Zocher again opened up the scoring in the second half on very similar opportunity as her first goal. With their confidence brewing, the Piranhas got two more scores from Anna Curfman and an own goal.

In the previous tournaments, the Chesterfield Ice Breaker tournament and the Score at the Shore South, Tampa, the Piranhas, played their best soccer of the spring. The Chesterfield tournament, the record was 2-1. The team did not advance to the championship game due to point differential; however, they had a very good weekend of soccer as they scored 6 goals and gave up 2.

Beach FC U15 Piranhas

At The Score of the Shore, the Piranhas lost in the quarter-finals to YMS Yardling, one of top teams in the region, by a score of 2-0. Those were the only 2 goals that the Piranhas gave up all weekend. During this tournament, they showed the class, effort, work rate, determination and skill that have become a norm for the ’92 Beach FC Piranhas. With a strong defending in the 3 tournaments that totaled 11 games, the Piranhas allowed 9 goals while scoring 15. Connor has been the backbone of the defense in notching 7 shut-outs. The combination of individual skill and the emphasis of team work has made the team success possible. The U15 Piranhas are coached by Juice Pantophlett.

However, with that goal in place for everyone, it allows our Beach FC teams to become successful and creates opportunity for each player regardless of their ultimate decision. Read more >>

Williamsburg - Former Beach FC and William and Mary Alum. Retires from the MLS...After a 10-year career, Steve Jolley retired from professional soccer.

Former William and Mary standout Steve Jolley announced his retirement from professional soccer recently. The 10-year Major League Soccer veteran played for three teams during his tenure in the league, finishing his career with the New York Red Bulls this past season.

According to the Red Bulls’ Web site, Jolley said he will enroll in graduate school at Columbia University. He also accepted a position with the investment firm Merrill Lynch’s Global Private Client division in New York.

Steve Jolley announced his retirement from professional soccer recently

Former Tribe standout Steve Jolley retired from professional soccer after a 10-year career in Major League Soccer.

Jolley was the ninth overall pick overall in the 1997 MLS Draft by the Los Angeles Galaxy. He spent three years with the Galaxy before being traded to the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, where he spent four seasons. Jolley spent the 2004 and 2005 season playing for FC Dallas, before returning to New York to play for the Red Bulls (formally the MetroStars) in his final season. He was selected in one MLS All-Star game in 2001 and played the entire second half in a 6-6 draw.

During his MLS career, Jolley played in 227 games, making 206 starts. He also finished with 12 goals and 11 assists. During his time in New York, Jolley played in 120 games, which ranks as the third most in the franchise’s history.

Jolley was heavily involved in charitable work during his MLS career. He and his wife, Pilar, raised $11,000 in a soccer fundraiser in Dec. 2001 to help families in their New Jersey neighborhood, who suffered personal and financial hardships as a result of the Sept. 11 attacks. The Jolley’s launched Just Jolley Charitable Foundation (justjolley.com), to support America SCORES, a soccer and writing program in U.S. urban areas, in July 2002. The foundation has raised over $20,000. For his efforts, Jolley garnered the MLS Humanitarian of the Year honor in 2002.

During his tenure with the Tribe, Jolley earned numerous accolades. He was a four-time All-CAA selection, including a two-time first-team honoree. As a freshman in 1993, Jolley earned CAA Rookie of the Year honors and was selected to the Soccer America Freshman All-America team. He was a three-time NSCAA All-South Region choice and played for the United States’ Under-20 National Team in 1994 and 1995.

Jolley ended his W&M career ranked among the school’s all-time leaders in points, goals and assists. He still ranks second on the Tribe’s career assists list with 37, while ranking fifth in points (109) and goals (36). Jolley also had seven game-winning goals during his career.

W&M advanced to the NCAA Tournament during three of Jolley’s four seasons and won CAA Championships in 1995 and 1996. During the 1996 season, the Tribe won a school-record 20 matches on its way to the NCAA Quarterfinals, before falling to eventual national champion St. John’s. During Jolley’s four seasons with W&M went a combined 68-17-5, including a 23-4-3 CAA mark.

W&M head coach Chris Norris played with Jolley during his freshman and sophomore seasons at W&M in 1993 and 1994. During the 1993 season, W&M went 12-5-3 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The following season, the Tribe went 18-3-1 and despite being ranked as high as No. 5 and finishing the season ranked No. 14, the Tribe did not garner a NCAA Tournament invitation.

Beach FC Wishes The Shak Family The Very Best as They Begin a New Chapter of Their Lives...I would like to thank the Beach FC family for giving me the opportunity to work with such an amazing organization and to fulfill my passion for teaching young people the game of soccer. I have been inspired and encouraged by many parents and children of Beach FC and I thank you for your support. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I appreciate the opportunity to learn from and work with the great staff and coaches at the club. For the Shak family, it is time to move on as God calls and life moves in a different direction. Some of you may know, I have accepted an opportunity to work with an organization in Charlotte, NC called Missionary Athletes International (MAI). MAI is a Christian non-profit organization that uses the sport of soccer to share God’s message of faith, hope, and love with those who are in need.

Beach FC Wishes The Shak Family The Very Best

The organization operates a professional soccer team in the USL Division 2 called the Charlotte Eagles and a W-League team called the Lady Eagles. My primary responsibility will be working with the men’s team as both a player and assistant coach. I will also be involved in building relationships with churches and teaching them how to use sports as a creative way to reach their communities. MAI is a multi-faceted mission that uses the sport of soccer in various ways to reach people for Christ. The professional teams are used to help develop and disciple young Christian athletes in their faith. Each player on both the men’s and women’s teams go through a 5 month discipleship course that teaches them how to effectively share their faith, how to use coaching as a ministry, and how to use the platform as a professional athlete to influence the community and the world in a positive way. At the end of each season the team partners with churches and other missions organizations to take international tours that allow players to serve others, play international competition, and to use what they have learned throughout the season. Next year, the team will be taking a 2 week trip to Nigeria to play some high level competition and to train church leaders and to show churches how sports ministry can be effective in reaching the community. The players on the team are also coaches for the club’s bible-based Christian soccer camps that take place throughout the course of the summer. Other opportunities exist for the players to work with inner-city kids and refugee’s who have settled in the Charlotte area.

Our family is extremely excited to join this mission to reach the world for God, through the sport of soccer. As a professional player for the past 7 years in both MLS and Division 1 I am proud to say that my faith has continued to grow to a point where soccer is no longer the most important thing in my life. It definitely used to be, but as I have continued to love God and love people (especially my wife Kari and daughter Jaeda) I have realized that there are many more important things than the sport. For so many years, I have lived, eaten, breathed, read, watched, and played the game as if it were the most important thing in life. Playing for the Mariners isn’t who I am, it’s just what I do for this season of my life. The past few years as I searched for what the future holds and thought about having a “real” career, I began asking myself questions like: what is life really about? And, what is my purpose here on this earth? I don’t know that I’ve found all the answers but I have started to find myself more fulfilled than I have ever been when I began serving and loving other people. The past year and a half our family has had the privilege of running the outreach program and working with the youth at our church, NewSong Ministries. I have found that as I began to give my time and talents to doing the best that I can to improve the quality of life for somebody else, God was doing something pretty amazing things in my heart. He continued to humble me because I began to realize that life is not about me. When you serve a purpose in somebody else’s life, rather than just living for yourself, somehow it gives your life greater meaning. Through loving God, loving my family and friends, serving in our church, and teaching kids valuable principles through soccer that they will hopefully carry with them for the rest of their lives, I have found meaning in my own life. People ask me why I love God so much, I really don’t have an answer except for the fact that I know that God loved me first. The bottom line is...God’s love has changed me forever and my desire is to spend my life helping others experience the same thing.

The Shak family is now in the process of raising the adequate finances needed for their family to live and fulfill the mission that God has called them to do. If you would like to make a contribution or for more information about Missionary Athletes International and the Charlotte Eagles Soccer Club you can stop by the Beach FC office for a brochure, visit the websites (www.maisoccer.com & www.charlotteeagles.com), or contact Steve directly at 757-395-0444.

Beach FC Congratulates Angela Hucles... for being named to the US Women’s National Team Roster for the 4 Nations Tournament

CHICAGO (January 15, 2007) – U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Greg Ryan has named the 20-player roster for the 2007 Four Nations Tournament in Guangzhou, China, taking place from Jan. 26-30. The U.S. will face Germany (Jan. 26), England (Jan. 28) and China (Jan. 30) in the annual competition that brings together four of the world’s top women’s soccer teams. All the matches will be played at Guangdong Olympic Stadium in Guangzhou.

Ryan chose the roster after a five-day training camp at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., that featured 28 players. This will be the sixth time the USA has traveled to China in January for the Four Nations tournament. The USA also participated in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006, taking top honors four times, winning in every year but 2002.

Without several veterans, the U.S. will bring a young roster to the tournament, but several experienced players will still lead the way. Defender Kate Markgraf, who will captain the U.S. team in the absence of Kristine Lilly, has 153 caps and four world championship tournaments on her resume. In addition to Markgraf, Ryan named six other players who were members of the 2004 Olympic Team in goalkeeper Briana Scurry, defenders Cat Whitehill and Heather Mitts, midfielder Angela Hucles and forwards Lindsay Tarpley and Heather O’Reilly. Hope Solo, who started 18 of the USA’s 22 matches last year, earning 13 shutouts, joins Scurry as the two goalkeepers on the roster.

For Whitehill, her first match at the Four Nations Tournament will be her 100th career cap. Should she play against Germany in the USA’s first match of the competition, at 24 years, 350 days, she would become the fifth youngest player and 19th overall to earn a 100th cap for the USA. Only Cindy Parlow, Mia Hamm, Lorrie Fair and Lilly (in that order) would have been younger.

This will be one of the youngest rosters the USA has ever taken into a major tournament, with 14 of the 20 players aged 24 or under. Ryan named three uncapped players to the roster in 2006 ACC Offensive Player of the Year Yael Averbuch, 20, from UNC, Lauren Cheney, 19, who scored 19 goals as a freshman at UCLA last season, and Casey Nogueira,l 17, who played a major role at the 2006 Final Four, scoring in both the semifinal and championship game to help the Tar Heels to the NCAA title. Averbuch was a member of the U.S. team that played in the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup in Thailand while Cheney and Nogueira were members of the U.S. team that played in the 2006 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Championship in Russia. Ryan also named Florida State star India Trotter, who earned her first and thus far only career cap at the Four Nations last year.

As all four teams at the Four Nations will be participating in the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the tournament will serve as a simulated run-through of a Women’s World Cup group, giving each team valuable experience in the country that will host the Women’s World Cup in a little less than eight months.
