All Play Format

Opportunity for longer play duration and touches on the ball

Purpose and Benefits

The purpose of the All Play Format is to provide players the opportunity to play for longer durations.  If the kids are playing longer, the games tend to open up and players get more touches on the ball.  This also enables players to get in a state of FLOW where there is less interruption and they become more engaged in the games.  When players are engaged, they develop a greater concentration level, competency in ball skills, and develop a passion for playing.  Furthermore, the players will improve their fitness levels over time which will help to prepare them for the next levels of play.  The multiple fields also provide a more player-centric environment where coaches are no longer concerned with substitutions or trying to win the match.  Instead, they are game facilitators, allowing players to make their own decisions and play more freely.  The format also provide the coaches flexibility to create more parity in the games as there will be varying levels of ability on each team.  Players can be matched according to level, creating a more competitive and challenging environment for every player relative to their ability.

How the Format Works for U5-U6 Teams

For U5-U6 games, we have added 2 fields to our existing 2 fields which gives us a total of 4 fields.  With rosters maximized at 12 players, this provides coaches the ability to have 3 players on each field participating in the games.

There are no referees in these age groups and the games will be facilitated by the coaches and parent volunteers.  The rules are simple and we look to provide little interruption in game play as we do not play with kick-ins, throw-ins, goalkicks etc.  The game facilitators are asked to simply put the ball back onto the field and let the kids play.  The duration of the game is a total of 32 minutes with the kids playing 8 minute quarters.

At times, there will not be even numbers as we cannot always roster 12 players on each team.  Furthermore, all players do not always show up every Saturday for the games. This is okay.   You may see games that are played 2v2 and 3v2.  This is okay as all the players will be playing and participating.  The results of these games are of no consequence.  The ultimate goal is to get kids playing and get them a lot of touches on the ball.

How the Format Works for U7-U8 Teams

For U7-U8 games, we have added 1 field to the existing 2 fields which gives us a total of 3 fields.  With rosters maximized at 12 players, this provides coaches the ability to have 4 players on each field participating in the games.

There are referees for this age group and players now play with throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks.  Fouls will also be called.  The duration of the game is 40 minutes with the kids playing 10 minute quarters.

At times, there will not be even numbers as we cannot always roster 12 players on each team.  Furthermore, all players do not always show up every Saturday for the games.  This is okay.   You may see games that are played 3v3 and 4v3.  This is okay as all the players will be playing and participating.  The results of these games are of no consequence.  The ultimate goal is to get kids playing and get them a lot of touches on the ball.

What People are Saying about the All Play Format

"I have been meaning to send you an e-mail all week to follow up on the “All Play” action on Saturday.  Love it!  Removes stress from coaches that have 11-12 players every week trying to balance time/minutes for each player and the kids enjoy the amount of playing time and touches on the ball!"

"I really like the all play format. In the end, it matters how the players like it and all of my girls loved it. I think the parents did too as the kids were all tuckered out and ready for naps in the afternoon."
